PORTAS VILASECA AT FRIEZE LONDON 2025
PORTAS VILASECA NA FRIEZE LONDON 2025
09.30.2025

Portas Vilaseca is pleased to present in the main section at Frieze London 2025Earth Knots”, a solo project featuring a selection of works by Guatemalan artist Antonio Pichillá (b. 1982 San Pedro La Laguna , Guatemala).

Guided by the ancestral textiles of his Maya-Tz’utujil heritage, the artist challenges colonial narratives through renewed Indigenous claims. Objects from the “Spantajeros” series evoke forms designed to protect growing plants from predators, while floor sculptures (series “Arqueología contemporánea”) merge stones from Lake Atitlán.

In the video “Tejiendo el Paisaje”, the artist expands his exploration of textiles beyond the loom, transforming the intimate gestures of weaving into a dialogue with the natural world and evoking a profound connection with the earth. Other textile works (series “Abuelo”) feature geometric patterns that challenge modernist postulates and their fabricated legacy.

Threads, knots, and colors serve as metaphors for cultural resilience, forging connections between past and present.

Frieze London 2025 takes place from 15 to 19 October at The Regent’s Park, in London, UK. We look forward to seeing you in the main section (booth A16).

Antonio Pichillá, an artist of Maya Tz’utujil origin, develops a multifaceted practice that spans textile art, painting, video, and installation. With a focus on collective experiences and actions, his research is deeply rooted in the culture and symbols of his community, located near Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, a place full of ancestral customs where the Tz’utujil language predominates. The Maya see themselves as part of nature without hierarchies: people, stones, corn seeds, the lake, all have their place in their cosmovision. Pichillá’s unique poetics are anchored in this identity, expressed through weaving, painting, and the incorporation of sacred objects. His work is represented in prominent collections worldwide, including the Museo Reina Sofía (Spain), Tate Modern (London, UK), Denver Art Museum (USA), Museo MALBA (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Kadist Art Foundation (San Francisco, USA), IL POSTO (Chile), Institute for Studies on Latin American Art – ISLAA (New York, USA), Banco de España Collection (Spain), Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (Washington, USA), among others.
