Starting this Saturday, the 26th, artist Marcone Moreira unveils his installation Vertebral at Casa de Cultura do Parque, in São Paulo. Comprising approximately 600 aluminum boat propellers, the work stems from the artist’s long-standing research into nautical materials and the processes of industrial transformation.
Presented as part of the No Deck program—dedicated to site-specific interventions in the institution’s outdoor spaces—the installation extends over 20 meters, with propellers in six different sizes arranged to mimic the sinuous motion of a serpent, evoking aquatic currents and displacements.
For over two decades, Moreira has investigated the use of maritime materials, incorporating wood and metal, and engaging with techniques such as naval carpentry and metal casting. His practice reflects a keen interest in the industrial metamorphosis of matter, a theme deeply rooted in his experience growing up near the Carajás Mine, in the southwestern region of Pará, Brazil.
The artist has had solo exhibitions at important institutions, including Paço Imperial (Rio de Janeiro), Instituto Tomie Ohtake (São Paulo) and Palácio das Artes (Belo Horizonte). He has taken part in group shows such as the Bienal das Amazônias (Belém) and “VAIVÉM” at the CCBB (São Paulo, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte). He has received awards from Funarte, Secult-PA and Itaú Cultural, as well as the Bolsa Pampulha. His works are part of public collections in museums such as MAR (Rio Art Museum), MAM-RJ and museums in Belo Horizonte and Belém.
