Starting this Wednesday (April, 30th), the Maison de l’Amérique Latine in Paris presents the group exhibition “Le Brésil illustré: The Postcolonial Legacy of Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768–1848)”, which offers a critical reinterpretation of the representations of colonial Brazil produced by the French painter. The exhibition is part of the cultural season dedicated to France-Brazil relations and is curated by Jacques Leenhardt and Gabriela Longman.
Among the highlights is the participation of Brazilian artist Claudia Hersz, whose works question and reinterpret the visual imaginaries established by Debret. Hersz offers a contemporary and thought-provoking perspective on the analysis of Brazil’s colonial history.
Other participating artists include: Denilson Baniwa, Anna Bella Geiger, Isabel Löfgren & Patricia Gouvêa, Tiago Gualberto, Jaime Lauriano, Lívia Melzi, Valerio Ricci Montani, Eustáquio Neves, Dalton Paula, Tiago Sant’Ana, Heberth Sobral, and Gê Viana.
The exhibition runs until 4 October
