The solo exhibition The Light and the Eye by Arthur Palhano is currently on view at the Miettinen Collection in Berlin, Germany. The project is the result of the artist’s residency at the collection and brings together a series of paintings that explore themes such as intimacy, memory and imagination.
Developed from Palhano’s experience between Germany and Brazil, the pictorial research weaves together the grey tones of the German environment with personal memories from Rio de Janeiro. Animals, plants and objects encountered in Berlin intertwine with childhood memories from Del Castilho, Guapimirim and Niterói, forming an affective topography shaped by the idea of belonging.
In the critical text accompanying the exhibition, guest curator Yago Toscano notes a transformation in the artist’s procedures. According to him, elements previously presented in a luminous and vigorous manner now emerge through dense layers of glazing, revealing a pictorial practice that departs from Palhano’s usual methods and establishes “an order of another kind of pictorial knowledge”.
